All candidates must supply evidence that they have undertaken a colour blindness test and that they are absent of colour deficiency. The Ishihara colour test can be arranged with any optician. There are no specific pre-entry requirements for candidates choosing this qualification. However, candidates should have a basic understanding of electrical installations in a domestic dwelling and an adequate level of Maths due to the technical information involved. An electrical qualification would be advantageous, but not essential.

Since 1st January 2005, electrical installation work in dwellings and associated land has come under the scope of Part P of the Building Regulations. In line with safety standards, most electrical work must either be notified to the local authority’s building control or carried out by a firm registered with a Competent Persons Scheme.
Government-licensed Competent Persons Schemes offer a route for companies to tackle Part P without submitting a building notice or using an approved inspector. These schemes allow ‘Qualified Supervisors’ to self-certify that domestic installations are electrically safe and comply with all relevant parts of the Building Regulations, saving valuable time and money for the thousands of firms affected by the change.
The Level 2 Certificate for Domestic Electrical Installers is suitable for those who carry out electrical work in association with or for their main work activity under the scope of Part P. Successful candidates will have achieved the understanding of a domestic electrical installer (though not an electrician) and will be able to demonstrate their knowledge to be nominated as a ‘Qualified Supervisor’ with a Competent Persons Scheme.
Unit 1 is specifically designed for those who wish to understand how building regulations apply to domestic electrical installations. This unit is of particular value to all electrical installers, and can be taken on its own or as part of the full qualification depending on a candidate’s existing qualifications, knowledge and experience.
